President Biden has come under fire from Republicans as well as Democrats over his pledge to deny arms shipments to Israel if it invades Rafah in the Gaza Strip.
“I think it’s pandering to the far left,” said Congressman Ritchie Torres of New York. told Axios. “Election year politics seems to have driven it. That’s my impression.”
Biden continues to oversee a divided party heading into the presidential election, as anti-Israel and pro-Israel wings of the Democratic Party are already at odds over massive student protests against the Israel-Hamas war.
Biden vows to withhold weapons from Israel if Netanyahu goes ahead with Rafah invasion

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania), an outspoken advocate of Israel’s right to protect it from Hamas, told Axios that he opposes Biden’s suspension of arms shipments.
“I’m adamantly against it,” Fetterman said. “We have to work with our key allies in all of this.”
Florida Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel told the outlet that Israel is “surrounded by danger and we need ways to protect ourselves.”
Other Democrats, including Rep. Becca Balint and Sen. Tim Kaine, also expressed support for Biden’s decision.

Sen. Tim Kaine, Democrat of Virginia, also supported Biden’s decision.

Republicans have generally been more unified in their resistance to Biden’s pledge to halt arms shipments to Israel.
