Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of profiles of 2024 Republican nominee Donald Trump’s running mate.
The competition is in earnest for those hoping to take the stage as former President Donald Trump’s running mate at this summer’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
Trump appears to be in no hurry to choose a future running mate as he remains on trial in a New York City courtroom, but those widely believed to be on the shortlist have expressed their support for him. I keep asking.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, one of many celebrities who traveled to Florida over the weekend for a series of fundraisers with President Trump billed as an “audition” for office, has long been at the top of the list of candidates. Although she has been considered a strong candidate, recent negative headlines could mean it complicates her chances.

Erin Perine of Axiom Strategies told Fox News Digital: “The first principle in selecting a vice president is to do no harm. Noem’s recent self-inflicted controversy raises the possibility that she will be elected. “This shows that sex is unlikely to generate support for Trump without drama.” A week of criticism directed at Noem, who confessed in an excerpt from a recently released book that she shot and killed her dog for attacking a neighbor’s chickens.
Noem aggressively pushed back against her critics over the week, claiming the dog was “vicious” and “dangerous” and posed a potential threat to her family.
“I had to choose between the safety of my children and an animal that would kill livestock and attack people,” Noem told Fox Business host Stuart Barney in a controversial interview Tuesday. told. “It’s included because a lot of politicians have been running away from the truth. They’re trying to get away from tough decisions.”
Perine, who served as President Trump’s press director during his 2020 re-election campaign, said Noem had handled the book controversy “incredibly poorly,” adding that she had never met a woman she had met before, and that her apparent falsehoods were false. He added that there were similar claims (even in the book). North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will block her consideration.
“It’s easy to see how her choices would cause heartburn and doubt. These controversies will continue to be part of the conversation around her for some time. While Noem brings strength to the table, “These controversies will cast a shadow on her candidacy and make her more contentious choice for the VP slot,” Perine said.

Democratic strategist Kevin Walling echoed Perine’s concerns about Noem’s book, calling it a “complete disaster” and pointing to the “do no harm” principle when it comes to political memoirs.
“Her recent national attention has likely made her less likely to be on the ticket. Above all, President Trump values individual performance in television appearances, and “It is perplexing that he cannot answer simple questions about his background,” Walling said.
“Being from reliably red South Dakota gives the ticket some geographic balance, but it won’t translate into real support in the Electoral College in November,” he added.
Others have been a little more specific about Nohm’s prospects as President Trump’s vice presidential running mate, such as pollster and political analyst Scott Rasmussen, who told Fox that Nohm is “a book-maker.” “She might have been an interesting option before release. At this point, she’s no longer a serious candidate.” . ”
A top Republican strategist and former Trump administration official told Fox that Noem was “by no means the most important front-runner,” and another former Trump official said, “Everyone makes mistakes at some point in their lives.” Mr. Nomu just made a mistake.” She did it at the most inopportune time. ”

Noem is reeling from a poor few days that Trump also admitted has been “rough,” but experts say it could boost the former president’s chances at the White House. He has many strengths and qualities.
“Noem is a two-term governor with both executive and legislative experience and served four terms in Congress representing South Dakota. As a woman and a member of Generation “We’re seeing voters in their 50s and 60s lean more and more toward the Republican brand,” Perine said.
Perine said Trump’s move to the right on issues such as abortion is similar to former Vice President Mike Pence’s conservative credentials in 2016 when it came to engaging with the hard-right wing of the Republican electorate. He argued that the campaign could play a role in this.
Walling said that in addition to holding a variety of elected offices and appealing to the Republican base, Noem, 53, represents a “younger, fresher face for the party.”
“Her diverse background as a business owner, farmer, rancher, and former Congressional intern for college credit when she returned to earn her degree as a legislator adds depth to her candidacy. In particular, her candidacy could deflect Democratic attacks on Republican policies on women’s issues.
Noem is scheduled to attend another fundraiser with Trump in New York City on Tuesday, sources confirmed to Fox News Digital.
