The city of Chicago has spent nearly $300 million on the immigration crisis since 2022, including $215 million since Mayor Brandon Johnson took office in May 2023. Last month, the city voted to approve spending an additional $70 million on immigrant care despite opposition from residents who called it illegal. Immigrants are given priority over local Chicagoans. This funding is on top of the $150 million already earmarked for immigration aid in the budget.
