Manchester United (4-2-3-1)
Andre Onana His short and long passes frequently missed the target, such as the pass to Ben White that sparked Arsenal’s victory, but the Cameroonian’s sharp reflexes prevented further goals. 6/10
Aaron Wan-Bissaka After losing Trossard in goal, the right-back was disorganized and then drifted in to add body to the midfield, sometimes refusing to do so, but was it his or Erik ten Hag’s doing? Five
Johnny Evans The Northern Irishman’s returns were mixed, with his pass to Trossard being brought down by Havertz, but forcing the German into a dead end. Five
Casemiro In the opening game, he couldn’t run fast enough and played Havertz onside. Playing again as a centre-back, the Brazilian was creative in the early stages with his quick passes forward, but then faded away. Five
Diogo Dalot The surge of runs was impressive, but there were too many attempts to thwart the attack, and a pass from Ben White to Havertz in search of goal fell to Dalot’s left. 6
Coby Mainu The first half was stale with feints and touches, but the inability to manage the game, an ability a top midfielder should have in his locker, affected the game even more. Five
Sofian Amrabat He looked aggressive in his first league game since December 17 and was expected to play Rodri’s role, spurring the attack and pushing Martin Odegaard aside. Your message has been sent. 7
Amado Diallo Decidedly intercepted Havertz’s cross. His smooth footwork, willingness to receive the ball and brilliant crossfield diagonally to Garnacho were the highlights of a brilliant 69-minute performance. 7
Scott McTominay A captain’s challenge that caused Hojlund to fall had little effect, and awkward touch remains an issue for a player considered to be a top-class player. Five
Alejandro Garnacho The speedster deflected one shot, but either wasn’t able to break through Arsenal’s defense enough or when he did he was way off the radar. 6
Rasmus Hoylund Coming into the contest, 14 goals in 39 appearances was a middling result for a United No.9. He could have scored his 15th goal if he hadn’t stalled early on. After this, he became isolated. 6
substitute Anthony (Diallo 70) 6, Kambwala (Evans 76) 6, Eriksen (Amrabat 87) 5, Forson (Wan-Bissaka 87) 6, Wheatley (Hoylund 87) 6.
Arsenal (4-3-3)
david raya Despite losing an early corner kick, the home side were unable to create any openings after that and had a mostly uneventful afternoon. 6
ben white The lifting ball to Havertz was a smart move that led to the opening goal, and the snap shot showed its power. He did a great job of getting rid of Garnacho until he got tired in the last 30 minutes. 7
William Saliba He looked relaxed in the opening 45 minutes, but his thrusting foot to stop Garnacho’s outburst showed foresight and concentration. 7
Gabriel Magalhães Heading to the roof of the net and maintaining a calm demeanor throughout the game, he once again showed why he and Saliba are essential to the Gunners’ title challenge. 7
Takehiro Tomiyasu There was little attack from Diallo on the wing, and Evans blocked his shot, but a spilled pass in the closing minutes allowed United to counter. 6
thomas party He glided around the park and caught fire, as when he intercepted Dalot’s cross during a threatening pass home play. 7
Declan Rice He and his party dominated the central zone, placing one Ghost in position to stop Diallo’s passes, symbolizing the class of England’s men. His shot from close range was deflected by Wan-Bissaka. 7
Martin Odegaard He was forced off-ball by Amrabat in the first half, but his smart positional choices kept the Gunners together after the break. A shot that hurt Onana’s hand. 6
Bukayo Saka It’s a shame. The shot was saved by Onana, who was often a spectator, but the corner that hit White’s head could have resulted in a second goal. Five
Kai Havertz He assisted Trossard’s goal with a precise cross. The German didn’t have the service to score, but his hidden presence raised the right questions for the home defence. 7
Leandro Trossard He brilliantly stepped back to clear the ball from Dalot and his subsequent finish showed typical poacher instincts as he charged down Arsenal’s left flank and scored from close range. 8
substitute Martinelli (Trossard 65) 6, Jesus (Saka 82), Kiviol (Odegaard 90) 6, Jorginho (Partei 90) 6.
