The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Elizabeth and Edward Stevenson through a drug sting.

Detectives executed a search warrant for the couple’s home on May 9.thThere they found methamphetamine, fentanyl, firearms, ammunition and body armor.

Shortly after the raid, detectives received information that the couple was driving a semi-truck in Texas containing illegal drugs purchased from a Mexican cartel, and immediately alerted local authorities.

As Donley County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety agents attempted a traffic stop, the Stevensons exited their vehicle and attempted to flee in a semi before firing at police.

As a result of the shootout, both men died, and police noted that the Stevensons had previously said they would die in a “suicide by cop.”

As a result of the search, vehicle authorities seized approximately 64 pounds of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $3.4 million.
