Federal Authorities Crack Down on Alleged Gun Trafficking Ring
Federal agents have taken down a suspected gun-trafficking operation, which reportedly supplied numerous firearms from Georgia to gangs in Chicago. Some of these weapons have reportedly been tied to juvenile murders and other serious crimes.
This month, a 23-count federal indictment was revealed in the Middle District of Georgia, charging five individuals after an investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Homeland Security Task Force.
Among the accused, Anthony Edmond and Rafael Enriquez face the most severe allegations, including conspiracy related to firearms trafficking and drug offenses. If found guilty, they could be looking at life sentences. Additionally, three others are also facing federal conspiracy charges connected to firearms.
Documents from the court indicate that Edmond is affiliated with the Black Disciples gang in Chicago and has links to another local group called the Conservative Vice Lords.
Prosecutors have claimed that Edmond was directed by his co-conspirators to buy firearms in Georgia using straw purchasers. These weapons were then transported and handed out to gang members in Chicago.
Edmond allegedly secured dozens of firearms from various gun shops in Georgia between 2020 and 2021, including at least 22 over a span of 10 months.
The indictment claims some of these firearms were modified into fully automatic weapons, which were then utilized in various violent incidents.
It is also alleged that Edmond procured ammunition, as well as extended and drum magazines, test-firing the weapons before they were delivered.
Authorities suspect he made multiple trips from Georgia to Illinois to deliver these firearms directly to gang members.
Law enforcement reportedly seized 20 firearms linked to Edmond, which he had acquired across three states between 2021 and 2026.
In one notable incident, police found a Glock handgun in the bedroom of a recognized juvenile gang member in 2021. Forensic analysis later revealed that this firearm had been involved in three distinct violent crimes.
Notably, prosecutors assert that this particular gun was used in a murder in Chicago in 2021 and later in the fatal shooting of a rival gang member. Investigators noted that Edmond bought the gun just 36 days before it allegedly played a role in the murder.
