California Legislature Rejects ‘Medicare for All’ — Again — Over Costs, Deficit

California’s Democratic-controlled Legislature has proposed creating a single-payer health care system, or socialized medicine, called “Medicare for All,” citing high costs amid a budget deficit. was rejected again.

The idea of a government-run, publicly funded health care system has seduced left-wing Democrats for decades. In 2016 and 2020, it became a focal point of socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) presidential campaign. And elements of that socialist ideal are, in fact, part of the American health care system under Obamacare.

But the idea failed again, despite Democratic supermajorities in both chambers of the California Legislature.

of Los Angeles Times report Thursday:

Latest attempt A plan to introduce a single-payer health care system in California was defeated in the state Legislature on Thursday. The high cost has been a drag at a time when Congress is grappling with a growing budget shortfall.

Assembly Bill 2200The plan, dubbed Universal Guaranteed Care, or CalCare, had hoped to create a single-payer, universal health care system for all California residents, but Thursday It was rejected by the Congressional Appropriations Committee. Rep. Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) said it was “very unfortunate” that he passed away so soon.

CalCare was projected to cost the state $392 billion annually. Meanwhile, California is facing the following problems: $45 billion deficit.

Two years ago, with cash from federal coronavirus relief spending and tax revenue from a Wall Street boom, California was running a $100 billion budget surplus and fanning utopian dreams.

Even then, California was unable to pass a single-payer system as previously due to concerns about the proposal’s prohibitive costs. The state Senate passed a single-payer bill in 2017, but the state Assembly refused to consider it.

Governor Gavin Newsom (Democratic), former fan The authors of “Medicare for All” say climate change is partly to blame for the rapid budget collapse. That’s because last year’s series of winter storms delayed tax returns, while the state continued to spend money it simply didn’t have.
