Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said Friday on MSNBC’s “Deadline” that Democrats need to make the Supreme Court an election issue.
“What we have to do now is give the Supreme Court a vote, and that being a member of the Supreme Court is going to be the lasting impact of this election,” Blumenthal said. “It’s about deciding who will replace the incumbent.” The next president will likely serve as a judge. The choices we make in this election will determine whether the Supreme Court truly reflects America. As for the plummeting support of the American people, as you know, the Supreme Court is a fundamentally anti-democratic institution, elected by the president, elected by no one else, and appointed for life. Once you start losing trust like you are doing now, it will be very difficult to recover. But we need to make sure there is support for a Supreme Court that reflects America’s fundamental values. ”
He added, “We need to hold Republicans accountable for what’s happening on the Supreme Court. Current members Thomas and Alito are to blame for their flagrant violation of basic standards of principle and decency. The American people should understand that these choices they make in elections have an impact on the courts, which is why they are voting.”
