Populist Dutch political leader Geert Wilders of the Netherlands’ anti-Muslim Immigration Freedom Party formed a right-wing coalition government on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through Europe’s political establishment.

“This change is being led by young people who have seen left-wing authoritarians destroy lives during the coronavirus pandemic, consistently suppress national pride, and invite the Third World into Europe,” he said. “We are writing history today,” Wilders declared, confirming that the other three coalition parties, including outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s party, accepted the core of his plan. “The sun will shine again in the Netherlands,” Wilders said. “This is the strongest asylum policy in history.”
The Hope, Courage and Pride agreement abolishes refugee family reunification and seeks to reduce the number of international students studying in the country.

Mr Wilders will not serve as prime minister in the new government. But he said: “My party will be at the center of power. We are very proud of that.”
Wilders surprised mainstream European parties by winning 25% of the national vote in November’s European elections.
