Louisville prosecutors Most likely the charges will be dropped According to Kevin Van Valkenburg, the cause was Scottie Scheffler’s arrest at the PGA Championship.
Early Friday morning, in the pre-dawn rain, Scheffler tried to enter Valhalla Golf Club ahead of his tee time for the second round. However, an unfortunate accident occurred early that morning, leading to increased police deployment and chaos at the scene.
So Scheffler, who was driving the PGA Championship player’s shuttle, tried to avoid traffic, but Louisville Metro Police Officer Brian Gillis told Scheffler to stop.
That’s when Gillis directed Scheffler to get out of the car. Police officers then handcuffed the world’s top-ranked athlete and took him away. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington captured the whole thing on video.
Scheffler went to the prison and posed for a mug shot wearing an orange jumpsuit. He then described how he stretched and loosened up while watching the arrest scene unfold in the jail. ESPN From behind the bar.
Police later released Mr. Scheffler, but he returned to Valhalla just 57 minutes before his scheduled tee time. He then shot a 5-under 66, a round he called “one of the best rounds of his career.”
Scheffler also said the incident was a “huge misunderstanding” as he only wanted to go to the course to warm up before an early tee time. But officers charged him with second-degree assault on a police officer (punishable up to 10 years in prison), third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and failure to signal a police officer.
The official police report also included the now-famous detail: “Detective Gillis’ uniform pants (worth approximately $80) were damaged beyond repair.”
Scheffler then struggled on the golf course Saturday, carding his first over-par round since last August. He admitted on CBS that the strange incident took a day to calm down, but who can blame him?
But Scheffler’s arraignment, scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m. ET, appears to be clear. However, prosecutors may drop these charges by then.
