His eldest son, Hunter Biden, wants to delay his Los Angeles trial on federal tax charges by more than two months, even though a judge previously warned there were no plans for “significant delays.”
President Biden’s son last week filed a lawsuit against U.S. District Judge Mark Scalsi on June 20, citing scheduling conflicts with an unrelated gun case in Delaware that is scheduled to go on trial starting June 3. He requested that the trial date be changed to September 5th.
Earlier this month, Scalci warned Hunter, 54, that he was ignoring key timeline deadlines to move forward with the case “at his own peril,” adding that the plan was “to bring the case to trial without significant delay.” I will move on,” he added.
Last week, the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the younger Biden’s request to reopen his bid to drop the charges against him.
Prosecutors with the Office of Special Counsel David Weiss said Biden’s son has a “team of attorneys working with him on each case” and that he is personally responsible for the botched trial, so the 77 days of the California trial will be delayed. said that the request for a postponement should be refused. .
“The defendant’s choice to schedule a week-long trial for June 3 in an uncomplicated gun case is his own, and not an issue that would warrant military action in favor of proceeding here.” said federal authorities in a filing last week.
Meanwhile, prosecutors said they plan to call more than 30 witnesses, “most of them out of state,” and have already scheduled them around the original LA trial date.
Scalci had scheduled a meeting for Wednesday to respond to Hunter Biden’s request for a delay.
The president’s descendant faces six misdemeanors and three felonies for allegedly failing to pay $1.4 million in federal income taxes from 2016 to 2019. Uncle Sam’s debt has since been paid.
Hunter Biden also faces three weapons charges related to charges of illegally possessing a firearm while high on crack cocaine.
The eldest son denies any wrongdoing.
