Third Infant Surrendered to Alabama Safe Haven Baby Box in 2024

A third infant was released into the Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station 1 in Madison, Alabama, officials said.

Firefighters examined the baby at the station and transported him to Madison Hospital for further testing, AL.com reportquoted a statement from the City of Madison. City officials did not disclose when the child was handed over or the child’s gender “to preserve the anonymity of the child and the mother,” according to the report.

This delivery marks the third since the boxes opened in January 2024. The Madison Fire Department’s Safe Haven Baby Box is the first of its kind in the state.

Baby boxes are temperature-controlled incubators that are often built into the exterior walls of fire stations, police stations, and hospitals and can be accessed from inside. At-risk mothers can safely and legally keep their newborns indoors. The mother then has time to evacuate before the outside door is locked and an alarm sounds to alert paramedics and hospital staff inside.

The baby will then be immediately removed and sent to the hospital for health checks. From there, the baby is usually taken into state custody and is often immediately adopted.

In June 2023, the Alabama Legislature expanded the state’s existing Safe Haven law to authorize Safe Haven Baby Boxes and allow the release of infants up to 45 days old.

The first infant was delivered less than two weeks after the Madison Fire Department baby box was installed. The second baby was delivered less than a month later.
