The White House on Tuesday called former President Trump “dangerous and offensive” after he shared a video on Truth Social that referred to a “united empire” if he wins a second term.
“Promoting content related to the Nazi regime in Germany under Adolf Hitler is abhorrent, disgusting and shameful for everyone,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates said in a statement. Stated.
“Anti-Semitic dog whistling is dangerous, offensive and deeply un-American,” he added.
While Bates’ statement did not mention Trump by name (the Hatch Act prevents White House officials from interfering with elections), the Biden campaign was more direct.
“Donald Trump is not playing games,” Biden campaign spokesman James Singer said in a statement. “We are telling the United States exactly what we intend to do, that is, we intend to rule a ‘united empire’ as a dictator.”
Trump posted a video on his “Truth Social” page Monday night featuring hypothetical headlines about his possible victory in November, including one that referenced a “united empire.”
The video was not produced by the Trump campaign and was removed Tuesday morning.
Trump campaign spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said in a statement: “This is not a campaign video, but was created by a random account online and by a subordinate who clearly did not see the president’s words while he was in court.” It was reposted by a staff member.”
Mr. Trump had previously come under fire for claiming that Mr. Biden was running a “Gestapo regime,” referring to the Nazi secret police. He was also widely criticized for saying that immigrants who enter the United States illegally are “tainting the blood of our country” and calling opponents “vermin” reminiscent of Hitler.
