Louisville Police Department is investigating the police department’s handling of the arrest of golf star Scottie Scheffler, Mayor Craig Greenberg announced Friday.
“I think it’s really important to do that and not just the next high-profile event.” [those that] It was held on a Friday, but it was held regularly,” Greenberg said. According to the Louisville Courier Journal“And if policies are not being followed, there will be transparency about that and action will be taken.”
Speaking about the incident at a press conference on Tuesday, Greenberg said he had specific questions about the fact that there was no body camera footage from the scene that led to Scheffler’s earlier arrest, the world’s No. 1 golfer. He said there is. The second round of the PGA Championship was held at Valhalla Golf Club.
“My understanding, based on the facts that I know at this time, is that I understand why the body camera was not activated during the initial contact between Officer (Brian) Gillis and Mr. Scheffler,” he said. “The question remains as to why the power was not on at the time of Mr. Scheffler’s arrest.”
Scheffler was arrested by Detective Brian Gillis early Friday morning on suspicion of refusing to obey traffic laws outside a golf course where a fatal traffic accident occurred earlier that day.
He was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and running a red light, and was eventually released in time for tee time just after 10 a.m.
Scheffler shot a 5-under 66 on Friday, leaving him just three strokes behind the leader. After struggling on Saturday, Scheffler bounced back on Sunday to finish tied for eighth and end his Grand Slam bid.
“First, my condolences go to Mr. Mills’ family,” Scheffler said in a press conference after Friday’s round. “I can’t imagine how they must be feeling this morning. I can’t imagine how they must be feeling. My heart goes out to them. I’m so sorry.”
“My situation will be resolved. It was just a big misunderstanding and I think it will be resolved fairly quickly,” Scheffler added. “I was driving this morning trying to warm up and get ready for a round of golf. I had no idea what had happened. [with the fatal accident]”
Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, told ESPN that Scheffler’s arraignment has been postponed from Tuesday until June 3.
No Laying Up reported that the charges are expected to be dropped.
