Recent CPI Data Sparks Political Reactions
On Tuesday, as the United States released the latest consumer price index data, various politicians, including Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, criticized President Donald Trump regarding inflation and the ongoing war in Iran.
“From the pump to the grocery aisle, the president’s reckless decisions in Iran are impacting American families. Working-class citizens are bearing the brunt of President Trump’s tumultuous choices as inflation rises, while he focuses on lavish events,” Pelosi stated.
Rep. Ro Khanna, also a Democrat from California, chimed in, saying, “Trump promised to lower prices. Instead, they are climbing. Inflation is currently at 3.8%, up from 3.0% when he took office. His decision to engage in a war with Iran is a total failure.”
Greene, who had previously been a strong supporter of Trump, now voices her discontent: “With inflation escalating and gas prices exceeding $4.50 a gallon, this situation stems from Trump’s war with Iran. This isn’t what Americans voted for.”
Earlier this year, the former House Republican resigned halfway through her term, citing conflicts with Trump.
The current average price for regular gasoline stands at $4.504, falling below the all-time high of $5.016 reached in June 2022 during President Joe Biden’s administration.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington also weighed in, stating, “Trump’s illegal war is driving up gas prices and inflation, and this must end.”
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the Consumer Price Index, a broad gauge of various daily expenses like gas, food, and rent, increased 0.6% from the previous month and 3.8% year-over-year, marking the highest level since May 2023.
