Pentagon admits the US-built pier to Gaza is failing to provide aid

Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder said Tuesday that the department estimates that none of the more than 500 tons of aid from the U.S.-built pier reached the people of Gaza.

The U.S. pier was authorized by President Joe Biden’s administration to distribute more aid within the war zone, on top of the aid brought in by border crossings and airlifts. The pier was built off the coast near Nuseyrat in central Gaza.

Mr Ryder said he could not believe that the aid brought through the pier had reached the people of Gaza, and as a result, the US, Israel and the United Nations should discuss “alternative routes” for safe passage of the trucks. Became.

The pier cost the United States more than $320 million to build and encountered other serious problems before it began operations. During construction in April, the pier was hit by a mortar shell. Workers were forced to take cover, but no one was injured, the newspaper said. Associated PressNo terrorist group in Gaza claimed responsibility for the attack.

Sending aid to Gaza and getting it to those who need it most has been a constant challenge since the war began. Once trucks enter Gaza, they are often attacked by civilians who loot them before they reach their final destinations, and Hamas members sometimes seize aid and swarm it themselves. Hamas also sells aid at high costs to civilians that it does not intend to sell. A truck driver was also killed by a mob attacking his delivery.

Hamas took credit for attacking the Kerem Shalom border crossing, a key crossing point for humanitarian aid entering the southern tip of the Gaza Strip. As a result of the attack, the intersection was closed for varying periods of time, delaying assistance getting inside.
