Hispanic Caucus Opposes Biden-Backed Bill for Failing to Include Amnesty

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has vowed to oppose President Joe Biden’s immigration expansion bill, saying it does not include amnesty for millions of undocumented immigrants.

On Monday, Biden called on Congress to pass legislation that would increase the number of green cards given to foreign nationals, expedite work authorization for migrants and allow for encounters with around 35,000 migrants at the southern border before the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) could deploy border patrols.

Biden’s lobbying efforts for the bill come after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he wanted to bring the bill to the full Senate for a vote this week.

In response, Nanette Barragan (D-Calif.), chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said: Said Her caucus plans to lobby against the bill, mainly because it does not include a provision that would provide amnesty to the millions of illegal aliens living in the U.S.

“Once again, the Senate border bill misses its time by establishing an enforcement-only policy and including no provisions to keep families together,” Barragan said in a statement.

As written, This bill excludes important protections and legal recourse for families, farmworkers, and America’s Dreamers. They have contributed to our communities and economy for decades in the United States.

Barragan said “any bipartisan solution” must include the DREAM Act and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, which would give millions of illegal aliens green cards and eventually naturalize American citizenship. He said it must be done.

“If passed, this bill would set back substantial comprehensive immigration reform for years,” Barragan said.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said if the bill is approved by the Senate, it would die once it reaches the House.

Passage of the bill remains a tough battle, with Senate Republicans joining far-left Democrats such as Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) in opposition.
