Oregon Rep. Maxine Dexter (D) is projected to defeat the sister of Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) in the Democratic Primary for Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).
Dexter, a physician, defeated Sushila Jayapal, a former Multnomah County mayor and sister of the Washington Democrat, and six other Democrats, for the seat held by retiring Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), who announced in October that he would not seek reelection to his Portland-area seat.
Dexter joins other Beaver state leaders, including former governors John Kitzhaber (D), Ted Kulongoski (D), Oregon Senate President Rob Wagner (D), and Oregon House Speaker Julie Fahey (D). Support is primarily from Democrats within the state.
Meanwhile, Jayapal has received support from national progressives such as Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.), her sister, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.). It received nationwide support.
Given the district’s strong Democratic leanings, Dexter is the favorite to win in November.
