California Dems vote against bill to repeal parts of sanctuary state law

A California lawmaker who tried to force a vote Tuesday on a bill that would eliminate sanctuary protections for illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes against minors was cut off from the microphone before the bill was defeated.

Rep. Bill Esseri moved to force a vote on AB 2641 in an effort to force state Democrats to go on the record. The bill would limit local governments to federal immigration enforcement, including prohibiting police officers from questioning others about their immigration status and from notifying immigration authorities when a suspect will be released from local police custody. It would repeal a provision in state law that prohibits participation.

On Tuesday, Essari tried to introduce the bill in Sacramento, but his microphone was cut off in the Democratic-controlled chamber.

Democratic Assembly Speaker Jim Wood quickly dismissed Essayli.

“Stop, strop, stop,” Wood said. “You’re not just filing a motion, you’re starting to enter into a debate. You can file a motion, but you can’t talk about it…Motions are not up for debate.”

A motion to suspend the rules for voting on the bill was subsequently filed, but it failed 13-36.

“All the Democrats voted against it,” Esseri told Fox News Digital. “They’re completely unintelligible and tone-deaf. They really feel like they can do whatever they want and there’s nothing anyone can do for them. They don’t care.”

“We don’t get clear answers from them about why child molesters shouldn’t be deported,” he added.

FOX News Digital reached out to the California Democratic Party for its position on the bill.

Essari said the vote effectively killed the bill, noting that all bills must be passed by Congress by the end of this week.

Mr. Ezeiri previously said that a recent case in which a Colombian man convicted of a sex crime in California was arrested by immigration officials in Massachusetts prompted him to call for legal changes to California’s immigration policy. he told Fox News Digital. The suspect was released from a California prison, but the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office did not notify ICE of his impending release, citing state law.

Republican Dalila Epperson, who is challenging Democratic Rep. Dawn Addis, said state Democrats want California to become a haven for illegal immigrants.

“This is their position and they are putting their lives on the line in this fight,” she told Fox News Digital. “Gavin Newsom wants to make this state a sanctuary for abortion and illegal immigrants. He wants to give them free health care and free schools. They can’t be deported for any reason.”

Esairi’s attempt to force a vote came after AB 2641 was denied a hearing in the Democratic-controlled Assembly Public Safety Committee. The committee came under fire last year when it initially blocked a bill that would have made child trafficking a serious felony.

He ultimately reversed course after an outcry from the public and Democratic leaders, including Newsom..

“They don’t want to give the Republican Party a platform. They just oppose it politically,” Esseri said. “They’re saying, ‘We’re not going to let the Republicans pass anything here.’ They’re just sticking their heads in the sand and not reacting, so they think it’s going to go away.” .”
