Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said more than 500 political candidates have been placed under federal protection as a measure to ensure the security of future elections. This claim comes in the wake of the killing of more than 30 candidates during the current election period.
Lopez Obrador said at a morning press conference. claimed Measures were in place to ensure that the elections were secure and free from interference. It claimed that more than 500 candidates across the country were under police protection. But contrary to what politicians claim, the current election cycle has seen hundreds of attacks on candidates and campaign workers in what some experts are calling the bloodiest election ever. It’s being done.
Morena, Mexico’s ruling party, expects to face its toughest test this summer, when the presidential election and hundreds of other local and state elections are held. Past elections have been rife with allegations of ties to drug cartels, illegal fundraising and violent acts.
This week, the Chiapas state elections office revealed that 515 candidates have dropped out of their respective races in the state. At least 16 candidates have been killed in Chiapas in recent months, according to Mexico’s El Universal newspaper.
State officials have tried to downplay the issue by claiming that of the 515 candidates who withdrew, only 29 said they had concerns for their safety.
