The Supreme Court on Thursday overturned a lower court ruling that found South Carolina’s redistricting maps unconstitutional, rejecting the idea that they are racially discriminatory.
In a 6-3 decision written by Justice Samuel Alito, the Supreme Court said, “Any challenger to the maps’ constitutionality must separate race and politics if he or she wishes to show that Congress was motivated by race rather than partisanship. Second, in evaluating Congressional action, we begin with a presumption that Congress acted in good faith.”
“In this case, which features challenges to South Carolina’s redistricting efforts sparked by the 2020 Census, the three-judge district court paid only lip service to these proposals,” the ruling said.

“That erroneous approach influenced the district court’s factual findings that were clearly erroneous under the appropriate legal standards,” Alito wrote.
