What Cowboys’ Dak Prescott is saying as free-agency payday looms

Dak Prescott maintains he has no interest in becoming a free agent in 2025 or receiving the huge amount of cash he stands to receive as the recipient of a long-term contract with the Cowboys.

“I’m not playing for money,” Prescott said. From Patrick Walker on the Cowboys official team website“To be honest, I had no interest in that game at all. Well, I’d be willing to give it up to play this game.”

“I’ll leave it up to the business people as to what that’s worth and what my plays should be given to the quarterback. It’s about controlling what you can control. Take care of that part and everything else will take care of itself.”

He has a salary cap of $55.4 million this year and will be a free agent after this season, and a clause in his 2020 contract means he cannot be franchise tagged next offseason.

The Cowboys don’t have the clout to keep Prescott in Dallas, and owner Jerry Jones will need to open his checkbook in record-breaking fashion or risk losing his star player.

Prescott’s agent, Todd France, is said to have “insane influence,” one NFL agent said. heavy.

Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, and Tua Tagovailoa are all quarterbacks who will likely receive extensions by next offseason, and Prescott will be looking to outdo them.

Prescott also has the potential upside of being one of the rare top-tier quarterbacks to hit free agency, joining players like Kirk Cousins, who signed a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons.

The current maximum annual salary is Joe Burrow’s $55 million per season, but unless Prescott truly cares about salary as he claims, expect that number to be broken.

Prescott has already said he’s open to testing free agency if it gets that far.

“I love this game, I love playing, and I love growing as a player and as a teammate,” Prescott said in April. “Right now I’m with the Dallas Cowboys. That’s where I want to be, that’s where I am, that’s my focus. Once this season is over, we’ll see where we are and the future is. If there is, [great]If not, start there.”
