Francesca Hong’s Rise in Wisconsin Gubernatorial Race
Francesca Hong, a Democratic state representative in Wisconsin, is gaining traction as a candidate for governor. Backed by Democratic congressman Ilhan Omar, Hong is one of the notable figures seeking to succeed outgoing Governor Tony Evers.
Recent polling indicates that Hong is, perhaps, slightly ahead in the race against other Democratic contenders, including former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Burns. The candidates’ proposed policies encompass free childcare, raising the minimum wage to $20, establishing public grocery stores, and increasing taxes on the wealthy. Additionally, there’s a focus on supporting gender reassignment and placing a moratorium on data center constructions.
Hong’s campaign website highlights her initiative for public grocery stores, noting that low-income and rural communities have been negatively affected by the closure of major grocery chains. “Fran wrote a bill that created public grocery stores to give Wisconsinites universal access to healthy, affordable food,” the website mentions.
Supporting similar policies, New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani has also promoted wealth redistribution and city-operated grocery stores since his election in November 2025. Alongside Seattle’s Mayor Katie Wilson, both elected on left-leaning platforms, they envision a more equitable approach to essential services.
Mamdani’s proposals include free childcare for children up to five years old and the establishment of several municipal grocery stores. Wilson, during her campaign, advocated for a public option in groceries, stressing that access should not be limited to those who can afford it. She previously mentioned Seattle’s leadership in raising the minimum wage.
In a broader context, Hong has expressed radical views, including the abolishment of ICE, stating, “A perfect world would be a world without prisons.” This perspective was discussed in her conversation with CBS58.
Speaking to Politico, she reflected on what she sees as the Democratic Party’s failure to adequately address voter concerns, suggesting that “listening to their feelings” has been a longstanding issue. A leaked memo from a consultant for Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany highlighted the risks posed by Hong’s candidacy, noting that ignoring her potential appeal could be a strategic misstep.
Hong has also been innovative in her fundraising efforts, using Twitch streams to connect with younger audiences. She recently collaborated with popular Twitch personalities for a cooking demonstration and a DJ set, showcasing a unique approach to campaign outreach.
Given that Trump won Wisconsin by a narrow margin in 2024, this gubernatorial race may prove to be pivotal in shaping future electoral dynamics in the state.
