‘Each of You Should Be Ashamed’ of Antisemitic Encampments

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) on Thursday told the presidents of UCLA, Northwestern University and Rutgers University that they should be ashamed of themselves for tolerating anti-Semitic encampments.

Fox was chairing the Education and Labor Committee’s latest hearing on anti-Semitism on college campuses. Witnesses Thursday included Northwestern University President Michael Schill, Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) President Gene Block, and Frederick M. Lawrence.

Mr. Fox began by addressing the university presidents.

“Each of you should be ashamed of your decisions that allowed an anti-Semitic encampment to put Jewish students at risk,” she said. “Mr. Cyr and Dr. Holloway, you should be doubly ashamed for caving in to anti-Semitic rule-breakers.”

She noted that Holloway has granted amnesty to students who have broken school rules and asked, “What message do you think that sends to Jewish students?” She said Northwestern has seen several members of its anti-Semitism committee resign in protest after the school caved in to demands by anti-Israel activists, including clearly discriminatory policies such as special scholarships for Palestinians and real estate for Muslim students.

Fox added that Bullock only mobilized law enforcement to remove the UCLA encampment “after violent riots had erupted” and after activists had blocked Jewish students from entering campus. “Your actions were too little, too late.”
She concluded, “Each of you has refused to enforce your own rules, keep your campus safe, and protect our Jewish students.”

When asked why Northwestern had caved in to demands to allow students to meet with officials involved in managing the university’s investments, Sill argued that the advisory committee that students met with already existed before the camp site.

When Fox asked Brock how he responded to reports that Jewish students were being disrupted by the “encampment,” Brock said he circulated a memo on campus on April 30 (the sixth day of the encampment). Brock maintained that the disruptions stopped after the memo was issued, but continued until the encampment was removed.

In response to questioning from Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Schill acknowledged that Jewish and Israeli students were not consulted about Northwestern’s agreement with the “camp.”

He could not explain why Northwestern University had committed funding to Palestinian scholars but not, at least publicly, to Israeli scholars.

Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) then asked Holloway whether he agreed with the statement made by Rutgers’ “think tank” that the Israeli government is committing “genocide.”
