A new Blue Star Families/YouGov poll finds that Americans view military families more favorably than other U.S. institutions, including the police, the president, Congress, the press and even the military itself.
Nearly nine in 10 Americans, or 90 percent, say they have a favorable view of military families — higher than those of the military (83 percent), police (73 percent) and the Supreme Court (55 percent), according to survey figures first reviewed by The Hill.
The president’s approval rating was just over half at 52 percent, while the press had the lowest approval rating at 45 percent and Congress had the lowest approval rating at 36 percent.
“Blue Star Families/YouGov research shows that military families are the most trusted organization in America,” Cathy Ross Duque, CEO of Blue Star Families, said in a statement. Blue Star Families is a nonprofit that represents and supports military families. It claims to have about 275,000 members in its network, according to the organization. Organization.
“We’ve earned that trust at a time when trust is in short supply, but there’s a gap between trust and the support families need, and that gives us a real opportunity to speak to the American people and support military families in their communities.”
More than half of Americans, 56 percent, said they believe military families have a positive impact on the nation’s progress — again, higher than all other groups, with the press and Congress trailing behind at just 21 percent.
About one-third of Americans, or 35 percent, say the general public is aware of the hardships military life brings to families. Another third of respondents, or about 35 percent, say the public “really” understands.
Nearly half, 45 percent, said the public “genuinely” values the service of military families.
Two-thirds of Americans in the survey said they believe the United States will be involved in a “major” conflict within the next three to five years. The same percentage of respondents said military families play a key role in keeping U.S. forces ready for missions. More than half of respondents, 55 percent, said they believe military families play a central role in the nation’s security.
The majority of Americans believe that military families should be taken care of.
About 85% said the United States has a responsibility to care for military families. An additional 71% agreed that Americans have a responsibility to care for military families. Only a third of respondents said they had done something to support military personnel and their families in the past year.
“There are military families in every zip code across America, and at Blue Star Families we call on all Americans to do their part to support military families,” said Ross Duque.
The poll was conducted among 1,500 U.S. adults from May 3-9. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 2.75.
