Former President Trump was booed by the crowd and mocked the party during his speech at the Libertarian Party Convention over the weekend.
Trump tried to appeal to the Libertarian Party at its convention on Saturday, even going so far as to suggest that they should nominate him for the nomination in 2024 – a suggestion that was quickly booed by the audience.
“Only do it if you want to win,” he told the audience about nominating him. “Don’t do it if you want to lose. Keep winning 3 percent every four years.”
The Libertarian Party has barely garnered any notable support in recent presidential elections.
Libertarian Party presidential candidate Jo Jorgensen received just over 1% of the national vote in the 2020 election. 2016 Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson received about 3.3% of the national vote in the 2016 election.
Trump used his speech on Saturday to urge the Libertarian Party to “come together with us” to defeat President Biden in November. He asked for the party’s support and said he wanted to “extend the hand of friendship” to the party.
“I want the support of the Libertarian Party, or at least a lot of your votes,” Trump said, to boos from some attendees.
There were some Trump supporters in the crowd, who at times chanted “We want Trump.”
Trump has also pledged to appoint Libertarian members to his Cabinet if he wins the presidential election in November.
He also vowed to commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, who is serving a life sentence for his role in running an illegal drug trafficking platform.
Trump’s appearance at the Libertarian Party National Convention came just one day after independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. addressed the crowd at the same event.
Independent candidates had called on Trump to hold a formal debate at the party convention.
