Elon Musk suggests AI could make all human jobs obsolete, ushering in ‘universal high income’

Elon Musk reiterated his stance this week that artificial intelligence could mean the end of human jobs. As technology continues to advance, Musk speculated about a world where humans no longer need to work, saying: New York Post.

Musk appeared remotely, Viva Technology Conference in Paris On Thursday, he was asked about his job being replaced by AI and what he would do if that happened.

“The question really becomes one of meaning: If a computer or a robot can do everything better than you can, does your life have meaning?”

“In a benign scenario, probably nobody would lose their job,” the Tesla CEO said.

“There will be universal high income — not universal basic income, but universal high income. There will be no shortage of goods and services.” Fox News Digital.

Musk also said he estimates there’s an 80% chance that all human jobs will be replaced by AI in the future.

“The question is: does it really have meaning? If computers and robots can do everything better than humans can, does life have meaning?” Musk said.

“That would be a real problem in a good scenario. In a bad scenario, there’s zero chance we’d be in any serious trouble.”

Despite these concerns, Musk predicted that AI will eventually take over all jobs currently performed by humans, but it raises questions about how quickly AI can advance to make this happen.

“I think we’re witnessing the most disruptive force in history here,” Musk said of AI during a discussion with British Chancellor Rishi Sunak last fall.

“It’s hard to say exactly when that will be, but there will come a moment when you don’t need a job,” he said. “If you want a job, you can have a job. It’s a kind of personal satisfaction. But AI will be able to do everything.”

While tech giants have high hopes for the future, AI doesn’t seem on the verge of taking over all human jobs.

Musk didn’t give a timetable for when the AI will take over.
