The parents of Levi Wright, the 3-year-old boy who suffered brain injuries after driving a toy tractor into a river in Utah, fear their son’s recovery “has not yet reached the most difficult stage.”
“This has been like a rollercoaster you unwillingly ride blindfolded with no idea what’s going to happen next,” wrote the toddler’s mother, Callie Wright. Facebook An update on the toddler’s condition was released Sunday, two days after he was declared brain dead on Tuesday.
“I pray with all my heart that you never have to know what I’m beginning to know,” her heartbroken mother wrote.
“No two brain injuries are the same, even if the accidents are similar. No two cases have brains that recover or don’t recover. There’s a lot that medical professionals don’t know, but what they tell you is based on legitimate medical literature and history.”
The mother explained that “any decisions” she and her husband, rodeo star Spencer Wright, make going forward will be “based on what we, the two of us who know him best, think he would want.”
Curry praised her son’s doctors for taking the time to care for him and giving them “the most precious gift of time.”
“Is it time to wait and see if God will give us a miracle, or is it time to study, learn and process all of this so we can make the most informed decision,” she wrote.
The grieving mother added that both are considering any treatments recommended by doctors and that she plans to have her son “visited by as many specialists as possible” while surrounding himself with people who she “feels supportive” as she goes through this difficult time.
“We still need prayers. We haven’t even gotten to the hardest part of this yet, so we’re going to need prayers for years to come.”
Levi Wright was initially declared brain dead after he sneaked out of his Beaver County home on Tuesday and drove his toy tractor into the Utah River.
The 3-year-old boy was lost in the fast-flowing river and swept downriver for about a mile, but rescuers are not sure how long he was submerged.
After being rushed to hospital, the toddler was deemed brain dead and beyond saving, and his parents prepared to remove him from life support but postponed after doctors “strongly felt” they needed to give him “more time.”
Around midnight on Friday, the young warrior woke up while his parents were talking to doctors about excavators and tractors.
The boy’s mother said his eyes were open for a while and that he was wiggling purposefully, not reflexively.
Unfortunately, Kari Wright later said that the MRI results she had after waking up were “not good.”
“We are devastated but this is only a picture that suggests quality of life. The real story for us is what Levi will do in the next few days,” the toddler’s mother wrote on Facebook.
Spencer Wright, 33, is ranked 35th in the world for 2023 by ProRodeo.
He comes from a family of famous cowboys, including his father, Bill Wright, a Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer.
