Egypt confirmed on Monday that one Egyptian soldier was killed in a gunfight with Israeli forces in the city of Rafah, near the border with Gaza.
The Times of Israel reported, “Egypt said one of its soldiers was killed in a shooting near the border with the Gaza Strip city of Rafah, appearing to confirm reports of a deadly gunfight with Israeli forces. The Egyptian military mentioned the shooting but did not specifically mention Israel.
However, Israeli media reports suggested that Egyptian forces initiated the firefight.

Egypt and Israel have officially been at peace since the Camp David Accords of 1978. But Egypt opposes Israeli attacks on Hamas in Rafah and has suggested Israeli military action near the border could jeopardize peace between the two countries.
Peace with Egypt is seen as “cold” because Egypt maintains a hostile rhetoric towards Israel and anti-Semitism is common in the Egyptian media. Israeli tourists visit Egypt but rarely the other way around.
Despite Israel having peace treaties with two of the four Arab countries with which it shares a land border, Egyptian and Jordanian soldiers have at times turned “rebel” and attacked Israel and Israelis.
