A San Diego police officer has resigned after he was caught last year locking himself in the back of his patrol car with a female detainee who had solicited sex, newly released body camera footage shows.
Officer Anthony Hare resigned from his position about a month after the investigation into the August 2023 incident began and the day before he was scheduled to meet with investigators for a second scheduled interview.
Hare, who had been with the San Diego Police Department for two years, was in a vehicle with a female suspect after arresting her for allegedly stealing a car outside a convenience store. According to CBS 8.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, is one of two people wanted on suspicion of car theft and there was also a warrant out for her arrest.
After arresting her, Haire was scheduled to take her to police headquarters and then to the Las Colinas Detention Center in Santee, California, for questioning.
Body camera footage released by the San Diego Police Department shows the suspect asking the officer if he was married and then soliciting sex.
“It’s not your fault. What harm is it for me to game the system? You know? That’s the way I see things,” she told Hair magazine.
“Are you single?” she added, to which he replied, “Yes, but I’m not single.”
“I’m going to have sex right now,” she told him, but he interrupted, “Don’t say that now… Don’t say that now. It’s all being recorded right now.”
As the pair approach the jail, Hare can be heard asking the female suspect what she was doing in the backseat.
The media added that Hare turned off his body camera and slowed his car as he entered a residential area.
About 20 minutes later, Hare called for a fellow officer to help him out of the patrol car following the embarrassing incident.
“I asked him if he was OK, he said he was OK, then asked if he had the keys to the patrol car…I asked why, what did he need,” the unidentified officer said of Mr Hare, describing him as panicked. “Officer Hare then asked me if I could go and see him.”
“I asked him where he was and he said it was near Cottonwood. I asked him why he needed me and he said he’d tell me when he got there. He said he was really embarrassed.”
Investigators reported that Hare believed the woman was having a medical emergency. According to NBC San Diego.
Hare and the woman denied anything untoward happened, claiming the officer was “checking out” a suspect in the back of the car.
“I was trying to wake her up and then I noticed the door was closed, and that’s when I tried to open the door,” Hare said in the video.
San Diego police found traces of semen on Hare’s belt, CBS reported.
“He said he wanted to meet with me once he was done with the warrants and the work that got him arrested,” she said.
It is unclear whether he will face criminal charges in relation to the incident.
