‘Did This Backfire On You?’: CNN Host Asks Biden Campaign Official Point Blank Whether Trump Trial Event Failed

CNN host Kate Bolduin asked President Joe Biden’s 2024 campaign communications director Michael Taylor whether former President Donald Trump’s off-campus event was a mistake.

Trump supporters swarmed and yelled at Hollywood actor Robert De Niro as he left a Biden campaign press conference outside the courthouse on Tuesday, which also featured former Capitol Police officers Harry Dunn and Michael Fanone and discussed the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. On “CNN News Central,” Bolduan asked Tyler whether the campaign event lent credibility to Trump’s claims that the trial is political and whether it’s bad for Biden’s reelection effort. clock:

“The Trump campaign seems to think that your actions yesterday have made this case blow up in your face. They say it proves that this case is politically motivated, as they have maintained all along. Jason Miller said politics had nothing to do with this case for months, and yet here they come and turn the trial in lower Manhattan into a campaign event for President Trump. Did this backfire?” Bolduan asked.

“No, not at all. We’re not talking about a trial. We’re talking about the threat that Donald Trump poses to our democracy,” Tyler responded. “Every day, he embraces political violence, whether it’s outside the Manhattan courthouse, whether it’s at Mar-a-Lago, whether it’s screaming in the echo chamber of Truth Social. That’s what we were talking about with Robert De Niro and Officer Fanon and Officer Dan, who defended our democracy at the Capitol on January 6th. So, of course, we’re going to take advantage of the media circus there. We’re going to do everything we can to communicate directly with voters, to break through this fragmented media environment, and to help people understand how important this is. So we’re going to continue to do that every day through the debates.”

Biden recently challenged Trump to hold two televised debates, setting a number of conditions, including no spectators and turning off microphones while the other candidate is speaking. Both candidates accepted CNN’s offer to hold the debate on June 27.

Speaking at a press conference, De Niro accused Trump of engaging in “cowardly violence” after the 2020 election and “letting the mob do his dirty work.”

“Damn you! Damn you!” one yelled. “How dare you touch a child! How dare you touch a child! You loser!”

“Democrats are trying to be the gentlemen of this world. You guys are gangsters,” the “Goodfellas” star said. “You guys are gangsters! Fuck you!”

Fox News legal editor Kelly Urbain said Tuesday that De Niro’s inclusion at the Biden campaign event backfired, calling him a “desperate” response to questions about his motives for the press conference.

“Because they were desperate,” Urbahn said. “Biden has had a lot of bad news over the last few days, Politico has had some bad headlines about Democrats panicking, so if I was a communications director for the campaign, I’d want to think, what’s this shiny object we can dangle here that everyone will run to?”
