CNN data reporter Harry Enten said former President Trump’s increase in support among black voters is a “huge wake-up call” for President Biden’s reelection campaign.
Appearing on “CNN News Central” on Wednesday, Enten said that it bodes poorly for Democrats that President Trump is now winning twice as many Black votes as he did in 2020, and that it’s enough of a change for Trump to win the next presidential election.
“This is a big alarm bell. Things are getting ugly, there are ambulances and police sirens going off, every alarm you can think of is going off, and that’s exactly what should be sounding on the Democratic side,” Enten said.
The reporters discussed an average of polls of black voters comparing the last presidential election with this one, showing that Trump’s share of the black vote increased from 10% to 21%.

CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten explains how Trump’s growing support among black voters could be “deadly” for Biden’s reelection prospects.
Enten called it a “clear decline” for the Biden campaign, noting that Biden’s approval rating has fallen 11 points, from 81% to 70%.
“If that holds up through the election, [it] “This would be the best performance among black voters for a Republican presidential candidate in 64 years, since President Richard Nixon in 1960,” he said.
Data experts say much of Trump’s rise in support is coming from black voters under the age of 49. Trump has 27% approval among them, compared with 64% for Biden, according to a chart averaging polls from CNN, NBC News, ABC News and the Pew Research Center.
Among black voters over the age of 50, Biden received 85% of the vote compared to just 8% for Trump.
“Black voters cannot be treated as a monolith, and this age breakdown shows that. Younger black voters are far less supportive of the president than older black voters,” Enten added.

Enten said that without taking into account other voting trends from 2020, increased Black support would lead to Trump winning with 291 electoral votes in 2024.
“Look at the states that have changed, you’ll see that the states that have changed are Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin,” Enten said.
Host Boris Sanchez said the figures showed a “huge opportunity for Republicans”, adding: “This is a real wake-up call.”

“To be honest with you, these numbers could be fatal to Joe Biden’s campaign,” Enten said.
