Republicans react to historic Trump trial verdict: ‘Dark day for America’

Republican lawmakers slammed the verdict in New York v. Trump on Thursday afternoon as “fraudulent and unjust” after the former president was found guilty of all 34 charges brought against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

“Today is a shameful day in American history,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, said in a statement. “Democrats cheered as they convicted the leader of their opposing party on a ridiculous charge based on the testimony of a disbarred and convicted felon. This is purely a political stunt, not a legal one. Weaponization of the justice system has been a hallmark of the Biden Administration, and today’s verdict is further evidence that Democrats will stop at nothing to silence dissent and crush their political opponents. The American people see this as law enforcement, and they know it is wrong and dangerous. President Trump will, of course, appeal this ridiculous verdict, and he will win!”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) called the verdict “a complete travesty that makes a mockery of our justice system.”

“This political show trial, conducted by an openly pro-Biden judge whose daughter is profiting from the case, with a jury drawn from the most liberal county in America, with absurd and ridiculous charges and outrageous jury instructions that guarantee a guilty verdict, will stop at nothing to keep the Biden and Trump-crazed left in power,” he said.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) also issued the following statement about the New York v. Trump decision:

“The verdict is a travesty of justice. The Manhattan camouflage trial shows what happens when partisan prosecutors in front of a biased judge weaponize the justice system with an unfair process designed to distract President Trump from the campaign and draw attention to President Biden’s failed and radical policies. The American people see through the Democrats’ loafer tactics and know that President Trump will be acquitted on appeal.”

Sens. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas), who are both running to replace Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell, also issued statements shortly after the verdict, with Sen. Scott calling it a “sham trial” and “the clearest example yet of election interference.”

Cornyn called the trial a “shameful act that should never have taken place.”

“Now more than ever, we need to rally around @realdonaldtrump and take back the White House and the Senate and get this country back on track. The real verdict will be on Election Day,” Cornyn said on X.

“The verdict, like the case itself, is a travesty of justice,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) said.

“An openly partisan judge biased the trial in every way, from allowing an unconstitutional charge in the first place, to excluding key evidence, to manipulating jury instructions. The American people will see through this as Joe Biden and the Democrats weaponize our justice system,” he wrote on X.

Republicans Republicans in both chambers of Congress have endorsed Trump and called on their colleagues to back the former president in the November election. More than 100 House Republicans and more than two dozen Republicans in the Senate, including the Senate Republican Conference, have endorsed Trump.

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama, a staunch supporter of Trump, said in a statement that the American people “will see through” this “pure election interference.”

Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, said everything about the Trump trial was “partisan.”

“Today’s ruling is no exception. In America, elections are decided at the ballot box, not in the courts. I support President Trump and he needs our help sending a loud message in November.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) lamented on Twitter that the verdict in the case was “a dark day for America.”

“This trial is a complete sham and nothing more than political persecution. The only reason Donald Trump was indicted is because Democrats fear he will be re-elected.”

Rep. Elise Stefanik, D-New York, said in a statement Thursday that the American justice system has become “corrupt and rigged” under President Joe Biden.

“I fully support President Trump in his appeal and hope that the New York Court of Appeals will achieve justice and overturn this verdict. The facts are clear: this was a zombie case filed by Joe Biden’s allies in a desperate attempt to save Biden’s failing campaign, and the verdict hinged on the testimony of a convicted felon who was disbarred from practicing law for lying,” she said.
