Three-time World Series champion Darryl Strawberry suffered a massive heart attack in March and was hospitalized with his heart rate at 40 percent.
Strawberry thanked his wife, Tracy, for encouraging him to go to the emergency room after experiencing chest pains. “If it wasn’t for my lovely wife rushing me to the hospital, I might not be here today,” Strawberry told TMZ.
Shortly after arriving at the hospital, doctors used a stent that has allowed Strawberry’s heart to “make a full recovery,” he said. The New York Mets will soon officially retire Strawberry’s No. 18 jersey.

The MLB great, who was forced to spend his 62nd birthday in a hospital bed, opened up about his harrowing experience and said his recovery is going well.

“I’m recovering well, thank God. You never know what’s going to happen. I’m 62 years old, in great shape and just had a terrible heart attack. I’m here this weekend celebrating my number being retired, but everyone’s health is most important,” Strawberry told TMZ. Strawberry will be honored when the Mets host the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 1.

When Strawberry announced her health scare, she thanked the medical team at St. Louis Hospital where she was treated, and also thanked those who had prayed for her.
“Tonight I thank God for his amazing grace and mercy in saving my life from a heart attack,” Strawberry wrote. Social Media Posts in March. “I am very happy and honored to report that all is well. I am so grateful to the medical team and staff at St. Joseph West Hospital in Lake St. Louis for their quick response and helping my heart make a full recovery with the stent procedure.
“I truly appreciate all of your prayers as I continue to recover. In Jesus’ name!”

Strawberry said his health situation had surprised medical staff but that he was now “back to good health.”
“The doctors said they didn’t know how he was still alive. There was little blood flowing to his heart, but after three months he was healthy again.”

Strawberry began his major league career with the Mets, before going on to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees.
