For many years, Media Matters has existed solely as a watchdog against the right, which often seeks to destroy conservatives’ lives through cancel culture.
Now the media company is undergoing major layoffs after Elon Musk took the company to court in November — and Lauren Chen is happy about it.
“They’re basically a left-wing watchdog group that exists to smear right-wing figures. To be clear, the issue here is not that Media Matters is pushing a left-wing talking point like the Young Turks; Media Matters is actually in a different category entirely,” Chen says.
“It seems like all they do is consume right-wing content and look for soundbites or offensive quotes that they can quote out of context and then try to cancel right-wing figures,” she continued, adding, “That’s why I hate them.”
Last year, Media Matters tried unsuccessfully to smear the wrong person, and ended up being sued by Musk, who accused the company of fabricating reports that juxtaposed advertisers’ posts alongside those of neo-Nazis and white supremacists in order to “drive advertisers off the platform and destroy Company X.”
“They were basically trying to game the algorithm to get a really unflattering screenshot of X that, for the average user, would never see when using the platform,” Chen explains.
The media company was forced to lay off at least 12 employees.
“We face legal attacks from many fronts and, given the rapidly changing media environment, we need to allocate our resources very carefully to remain effective,” Media Matters president Angelo Carusone said in a statement.
“For a right-wing content creator like me, it means fewer people trying to quote you in an attempt to destroy your career,” Chen says gleefully.
