Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy takes shot at Micah Parsons for skipping OTAs

Micah Parsons has quickly become one of the best defensive players in football.

The 11th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has finished in the top three for Defensive Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons and is looking to inquire about a new contract.

It’s common practice for players in his situation not to touch the field until they sign a contract.

And the Dallas Cowboys pass rusher hasn’t been on the field at the team’s practice facility.

Parsons visited the facility on Wednesday, and head coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday that Parsons has been there longer than people realize, but he still slammed the player for being a valuable asset, saying Parsons is missing out on “opportunities to develop.”

“Anytime we have a chance to be together, I think it’s an opportunity to improve — mentally, physically, obviously this is a limited time, but emotional connection and things like that,” McCarthy said, “but, you know, it’s a long year. Training camp is the time when we put the most emphasis on all of that. But it’s certainly an opportunity that’s been missed.”

Shortly after Dallas lost to the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round, Parsons said he wanted to be more of a leader.

CeeDee Lamb is also absent as he is searching for a new contract following the best season of his four-year career.

Parsons has recorded 13, 13½ and 14 sacks over his first three years and was a first-team All-Pro selection in 2021 and 2022 before falling to the second team last season.
