Police officers used a Taser on a man trying to stab people with a knife in Manhattan on Saturday afternoon, and witnesses said officers returned fire.
According to police, officers responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a man with a knife near East 102nd Street and 3rd Avenue in front of the George Washington House in East Harlem (just a short distance from the NYPD’s 23rd Precinct).
Police say when officers arrived and saw him attempting to stab people, they used a Taser to subdue him.
Police did not immediately confirm whether the officers fired their weapons, but witnesses reported that officers fired their guns.
Local resident Pai Chun Ma, 68, said he saw police officers pointing their guns at the suspect and shouting something at him before he opened fire.
“All of a sudden I heard a loud gunshot,” he told the Post.
“People around were just shocked, they actually heard gunshots,” Maher added.
After the shooting, more officers from the station rushed to help, he said.
The suspect was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital in stable condition, police said.
The officers who responded were also taken to a nearby hospital for examination, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
