TV tonight: a heart-wrenching drama about a gay couple’s adoption journey | Television

Lost Boys & Fairies

9pm, BBC One
Adoption is a long and difficult journey for most people, and even longer and more difficult for same-sex couples where one partner is barely hiding deep trauma. Duff James’ revelatory, loosely autobiographical drama follows Zion Daniel Young’s performance artist Gabriel and his partner, accountant Andy (Fra Fee), as they begin the adoption process. It’s funny, emotive and at times heartbreaking, especially as they arrive for activity day and are handed children’s pamphlets, each innocent face hiding a tragic story. It soon becomes apparent that the process is a bone-revealing, full-on character exam with the highest stakes imaginable. Phil Harrison
