Important Events
The team is out! Tonight England will be wearing purple whilst Bosnia and Herzegovina will be in white. There is a joyous end-of-season and pre-tournament atmosphere in the air at St James’ Park. We’re almost there!
Gareth Southgate speaks to Channel 4. “In this preparation period there is no hiding the fact that these games are important not only for the team but also for the players individually… What we want is to see the work we have been doing on the training pitch come to fruition… We are seeing how they embrace the principles of play we are aiming for… We know what Trent Alexander-Arnold can do with the ball… We want him to be able to do the job without it too… To play against high-level opposition both sides have to be right… What Cole Palmer has done all season is phenomenal… He has the freedom to suddenly emerge and cause problems… Jack Grealish came in a little later than the others and I don’t know Eze as well as Jack does… We have four players with really good goal-scoring records on the pitch… It will be exciting to see how they work together.”
Manchester City supporters will be hoping to see their old friend Edin Dzeko come off the bench tonight. Dzeko is best known here for scoring the first of two goals City scored against QPR in 2012, which sealed the Premier League title in dramatic fashion. It was Stanley Matthews, Stan Mortensen vs Sergio Aguero that day. Dzeko has scored 61 goals for his country, making him by far his country’s top scorer. Next best, Vedad Ibisevic, has just 28. Of the other players here tonight, Ermin Bicakcic has the next most with two. Dzeko certainly has the record.
team
England: Pickford, Konsa, Dunk, Guehi, Trippier, Gallagher, Alexander-Arnold, Bowen, Palmer, Eze, Watkins.
Subs: Ramsdale, Gomez, Branthwaite, Kwansa, Rice, Toney, Grealish, Maddison, Kane, Jones, Wharton, Henderson, Trafford.
Bosnia-Herzegovina: Vasili, Ahmedhodzic, Katic, Radelic, Bicakcic, Hajradinovic, Saric, Tahirovic, Gajbegovic, Žigovic, Demirovic.
Subs: Hadzikić, Hadzikadunić, Huseinbasić, Tabacovic, Dzeko, Mujakic, Brnić, Sosic, Muharremović, Pilić.
Judge: Rohit Sagi (Norway).
That said, the department Bosnia and Herzegovina have had a very good record against other domestic teams, going unbeaten in seven matches against English teams since their Euro 2000 qualifier loss to Scotland, winning four and drawing three games against Wales (two wins, two draws) and Northern Ireland (two wins, one draw).
England have never played Bosnia and Herzegovina before. As one of the favourites to win Euro 2024, they will be hoping to start a beautiful new relationship with a win. Gareth Southgate’s side are currently winless in three games, while Bosnia and Herzegovina have lost four in a row and eight of their last 10 games, with their only two wins during that time coming against Liechtenstein.
End of match: Gibraltar 0-2 Scotland. England are not the only home team preparing for Euro 2024. Scotland are also preparing for Germany in different ways, and they kicked off their preparations this afternoon with a 2-0 win over Gibraltar in the Algarve. Ryan Christie put them ahead after the hour and Che Adams added a second with five minutes to go. It was a near-perfect result for Steve Clarke’s Scotland, ending a seven-match winless streak that stretched back to last September, but it generated absolutely nothing in the way of hope or expectation. The kind that leaves you confused. Make a mess.
The England squad has been announced and, as expected, it’s an experimental one. Cole Palmer and Eberechi Eze make their first starts, Trent Alexander-Arnold returns to midfield and Ollie Watkins leads the line, while Toon hero Kieran Trippier will captain the side tonight with Harry Kane resting on the bench.
