NBC historian hyperventilates Trump will turn US into dictatorship if re-elected

NBC presidential historian Michael Beschloss told MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart that former President Donald Trump would become a dictator if he wins the 2024 election.

Beschloss’s comments came after a New York City jury convicted Trump of campaign misuse in connection with his dealings with Stormy Daniels. Trump has pleaded not guilty and has argued the charges and trial were politically motivated.

“Jonathan, do you think the majority of Americans would vote for dictatorship and anarchy? I don’t think so.”

“A former president running for president has been convicted on 34 criminal counts. What we are witnessing is unprecedented, legally and politically. But how does this compare to other destabilizing events in history?” Capehart asked.

“I think the choice is actually pretty clear. You know, you have a convicted felon. But back in the day, if a convicted felon were running for, say, city council, which probably up until recent decades would have been the highest position you could aspire to, he or she would have said, ‘I’ve served my sentence. I’ve learned my lesson. I’m remorseful. No one is more committed to enforcing the justice system than I am.’ And yet we all sat down in the brass elevator at Trump Tower yesterday and witnessed that tirade from this year’s presumptive Republican nominee,” Beschloss explained.

“So when you have someone promising to be a dictator for one day, you know, it’s not going to be a dictator for one day. Once it starts, it’s going to be for four years, no, it’s going to be for life,” Beschloss continued. “At the same time, he’s saying he’s going to dismantle the rule of law, which is the glory of America and what keeps the peace and ensures fairness that works for all Americans. You have dictatorship and anarchy at the same time. Jonathan, do you think the majority of Americans would vote for dictatorship and anarchy? I don’t think so.”

Capehart said he agrees with Beschloss’s assessment.

Many online reactions to Beschloss’s comments included the view that Trump did not become a dictator during his first term.
