In an interview on Sunday, former President Trump warned that the nation would “reach a breaking point” if he is convicted in the hush-money criminal case in New York and sentenced to house arrest or prison.
“I don’t know if the American people can stand up to that. I don’t know if the American people can stand up to that,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends Weekend” when asked about the possibility of house arrest or prison time.
“It’s going to be hard for the American people to accept. At some point there’s going to be a breaking point,” Trump added.
Trump, a presumed 2024 Republican presidential nominee, was convicted last week of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to conceal a plot to conceal information that could harm the American people ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
Judge Juan Marchan set Trump’s sentence for July 11, four days before the Republican National Convention, where he is set to formally become the party’s nominee. Trump’s legal team has vowed to appeal the conviction.
In an interview with Fox News, President Trump said he was “fine” with a prison sentence, and that he was concerned about the public’s reaction.
“I’m OK with that,” Trump said. “I saw one of my lawyers on TV the other day saying, ‘Oh, no, you wouldn’t want to do that to the president.’ And I said, ‘Don’t beg for anything.’ That’s the reality of it.”
