Chennedy Carter has no ‘regrets’ over Caitlin Clark foul

Chennedy Carter is standing her ground regarding the controversial foul she committed on Caitlin Clark over the weekend, saying she has no “regrets” about the play.

Carter spoke about the incident during a joint press conference with head coach Angel Reese following the Sky’s practice on Monday.

The Chicago guard said he has no regrets about the relationship, but added that it’s “all love” after they come off the court.

“I’m a competitor. No matter who I’m up against, no matter who’s in front of me, I’m going to compete. So that’s what it was,” Carter told reporters on Monday. “It’s the heat of the moment. We’re giving it our all. Offense and defense are on the line. It’s basketball. It’s all basketball. At the end of the game, it’s all love.”

She added: “I don’t regret anything. No matter who I’m up against, like I said, whoever I’m up against, I’m going to give it my all. I have no regrets.”

The hard foul, later upgraded to a Flagrant 1 by the WNBA, occurred late in the third quarter, just as Indiana’s Aaliyah Boston was about to make an inbounds pass, off the ball.

The foul sent Clark to the floor and has since become one of the most talked-about moments in the WNBA and has garnered media attention across the country.

Carter took issue with those who criticize her and her teammates without watching “the whole game” and called for people to get to know the players who were in the WNBA before Clark arrived.

“A lot of times fans don’t understand me as a player, but I wish they’d understand me as a person and not form an opinion about me based on one video,” she said. “I’m really passionate about the game and I’m genuine. … But please don’t form an opinion based on one short clip when you haven’t seen the whole game and the plays that led up to it.”

Video posted to social media after the play provided more details about what led to Carter’s flagrant foul.

Video shows the two players getting physically involved early in the game and Clarke can also be seen yelling profanity at Carter shortly before the incident.

Carter also appeared to address the issue while speaking to reporters on Monday.

“I think I got hit in the head on the previous play. It was just one of those things that happened in an excited moment,” Carter said, adding that he didn’t know Clark personally before the game. “At the end of the day, this is basketball. It’s a competition. This is basketball and the opponent is a guy like me. I look at myself as a dog. If they’re going to throw punches, I’m going to compete with them. I’m going to play at the level they’re going to throw. That’s who I am as a player.”

Carter praised how her teammates have supported her through the turmoil since Saturday, and how she has supported them.

The Sky will face Liberty on Tuesday as they try to move past the Clark incident.
