Illegal Had Deportation Dismissed Weeks Before Allegedly Shooting NYC Cops

An illegal immigrant accused of shooting and killing two New York Police Department (NYPD) officers on Monday had his deportation appeal dismissed by a federal immigration judge several weeks ago, according to reports.

Bernardo Raul Castro Mata is a 19-year-old undocumented immigrant from Venezuela who currently lives in East Elmhurst, Queens. arrested An early morning shootout with police left NYPD officers Richard Iarrusso and Christopher Abreu dead.

According to the New York City Police Department, Castro Mata crossed the U.S.-Mexico border near Eagle Pass, Texas, in July 2023. At the time of the incident, the suspect was staying at an immigrant shelter in Queens.

May 6th, New York Post reportCastro Mata’s deportation case was closed by a federal immigration judge in 2014, less than a month after the shooting that left Iarrusso and Abreu recuperating in the hospital.

The dismissal of the case means Castro Mata has not been granted asylum to remain in the United States, but it also means he is not a priority for deportation by President Joe Biden’s administration.

According to the NYPD: DetectiveCastro Mata was riding his moped the wrong way down a one-way street in East Elmhurst when Yarusso and Abreu attempted to stop him. Instead of stopping, Castro Mata abandoned his moped and fled on foot, then allegedly opened fire on two officers with an illegal firearm.

One officer was shot in the chest and the other in the leg. By Monday morning, both officers had been treated at a nearby hospital and released.

Castro Mata has previous police complaints, including allegations that he attacked a woman in Queens and stole her credit card to use at a nearby tobacco store.

Criminal charges are pending against Castro Mata in the NYPD shooting.
