Corey Harris, 44, made headlines last week in Ann Arbor, Michigan, after a Zoom court video showed him driving a car during a hearing on his suspended driver’s license.
Judge Cedric Simpson noticed Harris participated in the May 15 video hearing from the driver’s seat of a car and called him out: “Okay, I see there’s something I don’t understand. This is driving with a suspended license.” [hearing]He was just driving and he didn’t have a license.”
“Always double check your back because these workers say they’ll do something but don’t actually do anything.”
Simpson announced that Harris’ bail had been revoked and ordered him to report to the Washtenaw County Jail by 6 p.m. that same day or he would be held without bail. WJBK-TV reported.
But it turns out Harris should never have been on trial in the first place.
He had his license suspended in Saginaw County in 2010 for unpaid child support, according to Michigan Secretary of State records. WXYZ-TV reportedBut court records show a judge revoked the license suspension in 2022, WXYZ reported.
But WXYZ said information about the suspension reversal never reached the Michigan Secretary of State and no changes were made to the records.
According to a video report from WXYZ, Harris was charged with driving with a suspended license in Pittsfield Township last October.
Harris spent two days in jail after a Zoom video hearing last month, but told the station she returned to the secretary of state’s office to resolve the issue, WXYZ reported.
“It’s very embarrassing,” Harris told WXYZ, “and it’s very embarrassing considering the connections I have to the church and the community.”
in Another storyWXYZ said it was unclear why neither Harris’ public defender nor Pittsfield County prosecutors resolved his case months ago. Notably, WXYZ reported that it took them less than five minutes to find Saginaw County court records showing a judge revoked Harris’ license suspension in January 2022.
WXYZ said it reached out to the prosecutor’s office and Harris’ attorney’s office, and a county spokesperson said the public defender’s office doesn’t comment on ongoing litigation, WXYZ added.
The station also reported that the Saginaw County friend of the court involved in the original child support case did not return calls from WXYZ, but the Secretary of State’s office told the station on Friday that it had not received permission from the friend of the court to have Harris’ driver’s license reinstated after she paid fees.
“Always double check behind these workers because even though they say they’ll do something, they won’t actually do it,” Harris told WXYZ.
