Collin Morikawa spent some quality time with Tiger Woods at the TGR Foundation fundraiser “Tiger Jam” in Las Vegas last week.
Morikawa said the 15-time major champion can hit any shot, but as the golf world knows, Woods’ biggest challenge right now is the difficulty he faces even walking 18 holes, let alone four days in a row.
Still, Morikawa explained why Woods never requests to use a golf cart during major championships or PGA Tour events.
“His ego is pretty big, and so are all of us,” Morikawa said ahead of the Memorial Tournament.
“He just [playing] Maybe we shouldn’t ride the golf cart until he’s too old to ride. If I was allowed to ride the golf cart, I’d ride it. I’d love to.”
The PGA Tour Champions, a circuit for players over 50, allows ADA-approved members to use golf carts. Bernhard Langer was granted such permission recently. That’s why, at 66, he can still compete, even though he ruptured his Achilles tendon in February. Langer said he “can’t even walk,” but he came close to winning the Principals Charity Classic last week.
Woods, 18 years younger than Langer, uses a cart when practicing at home but has never used one during a tournament. Woods insists on walking like everyone else, but no one puts in the effort to stroll the golf course like he does.
But none of them have Woods’ ego.
