IDF Finds Tunnel in Child’s Room; Strikes Hamas HQ Inside UN School

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Thursday they had discovered the entrance to a Hamas terror tunnel inside a child’s room during an operation in Rafah.

In June 2024, the Israeli Defense Forces discovered a Hamas tunnel in a Palestinian child’s room in the town of Rafah, near the Gaza-Egypt border (IDF)

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement:

Over the past few weeks, soldiers from the 828th Infantry Training School Brigade under the command of the 162nd Division have conducted precise, intelligence-based and targeted operations in the Rafah area, finding weapons, eliminating terrorists and destroying terrorist infrastructure in the area.

This week, troops discovered a tunnel shaft in a child’s room, next to a meat cleaver, and identified six terrorists near a school in their area of responsibility, who were eliminated with drone and tank fire.

The 828th Brigade Combat Team has completed its mission in the Rafah area and is now preparing for future operations.

The IDF continues its slow advance in Rafah, fighting Hamas terrorists and destroying tunnels, including smuggling tunnels along the Egyptian border. One of the tunnels destroyed in Rafah this week was 2 kilometers long.

The IDF also carried out precision airstrikes Thursday morning on a compound allegedly used by dozens of Hamas terrorists inside the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) compound in the Gaza Strip.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement:

Shortly before, Israeli Air Force fighter jets, under the command of IDF Intelligence and the ISA, carried out a precision strike on a Hamas compound embedded within a UNRWA school in the Nuseira district.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists who were part of the Nukba Unit and took part in a deadly attack on a community in southern Israel on October 7th were operating from the facility.

The terrorists exploited the school, using it as a shelter and launching their attacks from the school’s surroundings. The attack eliminated several terrorists who had been planning to carry out the attack and were immediately pursuing terrorist activities against the Israel Defense Forces.

Prior to the attack, various measures were taken to reduce the risk of harm to innocent civilians during the attack, including aerial surveillance and additional intelligence gathering.

The Israel Times report Hamas claimed Israel had carried out a “genocide” and UNRWA said dozens of people had been killed.

Hamas-run government media claimed at least 27 people were killed in what it called an Israeli “massacre.” UNRWA spokeswoman Juliette Touma told Reuters the number of people believed to have died in Israel’s attack on the Nuseirat school was between 35 and 45, but that she could not yet confirm the figure. It was not immediately clear how many of the victims were members of terrorist organizations.

CNN repeated Hamas’ claims and described the attack as “Israeli [sic] An attack on a UN school left dozens dead.

Israeli government spokesman David Mensah told reporters on Thursday that among the terrorists killed were those involved in the Oct. 7 attack, adding that the IDF had targeted three specific classrooms.

Mensah added that the school was being used as a “staging ground for attacks” and a “forward operating base.” He noted that the IDF had twice called off attacks before launching them in the safest conditions, due to concerns about possible civilian casualties.

Israel has long accused Hamas of using schools for terrorist purposes and has accused UNRWA of supporting Hamas.

Hamas continues to fight back, trying to infiltrate terrorists into Israel as the IDF advances into Rafah. Terrorists were seen moving towards the border in the morning fog, and one Israeli soldier was killed in a gunfight on Thursday. Three terrorists involved in the infiltration attempt were killed in airstrikes and tank fire, the IDF said.
