WNBA player Cameron Brink said that young white players in the league have privilege because they appear more feminine than the more “masculine” looking female players in the league.
Brink was the No. 2 overall pick by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2024 WNBA Draft, behind Caitlin Clark.
The 6-foot-4-inch player was asked about her first few games in the professional league and how she hopes to improve upon them. Asked what the most cliché narrative is about women’s sports, Brink said there are certain expectations placed on her and Clark.
She said the idea of veteran players “pitted against the newcomers” and the “old generation versus new generation” trope was particularly unacceptable.
“I think Caitlin Clark has it the hardest right now, and I understand that. … We’re expected to be perfect. We’re coming off a losing season and we were drafted by a high team, and that’s OK. It’s a learning process. But people expect us to be perfect, and it’s really exhausting.”
“I won’t rest until the W is even more iconic than it is now.”
Brink said in an interview. Uprox What role does she want to play in making the WNBA a more “iconic” league?
Brink responded that she would like to expand her fan base to “support all types of players.” Brink seems to be saying that she would be happy if fans would support players who look “less feminine.”
“I acknowledge that young white players in the league have privilege. It’s not always the case, but we are born with privilege, we have the privilege of appearing feminine. Some of my teammates are more masculine,” Brink asserted. “Some of my teammates refer to themselves by the pronouns they/them,” she added.
Brink blamed himself for dressing “femininely” and said he wanted players to be popular for reasons other than their appearance.
“I want more acceptance. [masculine women, pronoun users] I want to be accepted by everyone, not just be supported by my appearance. I like to dress femininely, so I know that’s a strong tendency, but that’s just me. I want to be accepted by everyone, not just be noticed by my appearance.
The basketball star was asked to complete the sentence, “I won’t rest until…” to which he replied, “I won’t rest until the W is even more iconic than it is now.”
