Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff plans to attend the Washington Mystics game on Friday in honor of National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
Emhoff plans to attend the game at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., where the Mystics will face off against the Indiana Fever, led by WNBA star Kaitlyn Clark.
National Gun Violence Awareness Day is an annual event held on the first Friday in June that marks the start of Wear Orange Weekend.
The weekend marks the demise of Hadiyah Pendleton, who was shot and killed at a Chicago playground. It began as a vigil for Pendleton by friends in 2015 and has grown each year since.
“Today, Wear Orange honors Hadiya and the more than 120 people who are shot and killed every day in the United States, as well as the hundreds of others who are shot and injured and the countless others traumatized by acts of gun violence.” The Mystics said in a statement.
In 2023, Emhoff participated in a Mystics youth basketball clinic with Washington-area children and victims of gun violence.
The Mystics encouraged fans to wear orange uniforms for Friday’s game.
