Reds fan fails to catch Elly De La Cruz homer in beer cup as Cincinnati wins fifth straight game

Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of Ellie de la Cruz’s major league debut.

The electrifying shortstop celebrated his anniversary with a three-run homer over the right-field fence against the Chicago Cubs. De la Cruz’s work in the bottom of the third inning helped the Reds to their fifth straight win.

The ball exploded off De La Cruz’s bat, reaching a top speed of 114.7 mph. While some fans bring baseball gloves to the ballpark in case of a foul ball or a home run, Reds fans in the right field stands decided to use beer cups.

While this fan’s funny but hapless attempt to catch a fastball with a beer cup may serve as a warning to others in the future, another Reds fan pulled off a similar feat last season.

A fan at Great American Ball Park was in just the right place at the right time with a beer when Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon hit a foul ball.
