Haiti’s recently elected prime minister, Garry Conille, was taken to a hospital in Port-au-Prince on Saturday, days after arriving in the country, the ministry said. New York PostThe report noted it was not immediately clear why Conille was hospitalized.
The prime minister’s office said in a statement that Conille was feeling a little unwell after “a week of intense activity” but did not release further details about his condition. It said he was in a stable condition and thanked those who came to visit him and wished them good health.
Louis Gerard Gil, a member of the interim presidential council, was at the hospital to visit Conille but said he could not provide further information about his condition.
Associated Press report One person close to Conille, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they had noticed that Haiti’s new leader seemed to have trouble breathing. The source also said Conille has asthma and sometimes needs to use an inhaler.
The person said he had told senior officials that Conir needed to be taken to hospital for treatment, but a spokesman for the new leader did not respond to a request for comment.
The Post said Conir faces an uphill battle as the country’s new leader, with rampant gang violence being one of its most pressing issues, and that the small country is reportedly open to UN-backed Kenyan police to help stem the violence.
The deployment of these police forces has been delayed in part because Haiti is now without a prime minister, after former prime minister Ariel Henry resigned at the end of April.
Henry was reportedly on an official visit to Kenya when Haitian gangs launched attacks on two of Haiti’s largest prisons, freeing more than 4,000 inmates on February 29.
The extreme violence prevented Henry from returning home and ultimately led to his resignation.
Conille just arrived in Haiti on June 1. He previously served as UNICEF’s Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, a role he took up in January 2023.
It remains unclear how Conille plans to combat gang violence across the country and whether he has plans to take back prisoners released under Henry’s administration.
